This past Saturday The Ohio Bruins held the first tryouts for the 2022-2023 American Basketball Association season. There were players from all over Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Kentucky in attendance.
Head Coach Chris Anthony Sr put the guys through a rigorous workout that sent a couple participants home early. As tryouts transitioned to five on five full court games, there was some really high level basketball on display. A couple players that stood out include Jose DeLeon, Steven Freeman, Ba’sha L. Standard, Daniel Guevara, Melieck Evans, and Kameron King.
Returning players Jay Farrow and Allanté Gorham showed the other players the Bruin way from start to finish. Allanté was very vocal and adamant about guys working hard and competing. During one of the drills the players were having trouble as a collective to get though it. Jay showed his leadership and called everyone to mid court and helped to collect themselves after an intense workout.
Two of the Bruins newest additions are Josh Shannon and Matt Bingaya and they’re no stranger to The Ohio Bruins as both were on the opposition this summer. When asked about what brought him to The Ohio Bruins Josh had this to say “The atmosphere in the gym when I played as a visitor was fun exciting you can really tell that basketball is taken serious in Columbus, Ohio. The Bruins commitment to the players along with the exposure and skill development, I have everything I need to take my game to the next level.” Matt Bingaya played his college ball at Fairmont State and Southern Miss and is well traveled on the professional scene. He makes his return to Columbus this season with the Bruins and had this to say “it feels good to be back home and get a chance to hoop in front of some of my family and closest friends. Columbus has got great talent and the Bruins have something special going here. My experience as a professional will speak for itself not only to show my talent but to also show that no matter who you are the work still has to be done everyday to be a pro.”
The atmosphere is expected to be more electric this weekend as guys try to secure their spot. Returning players Phil Bledsoe and Balla Thiam along with several registered players we’re not at this past weekends tryout as they tried out for the Cleveland Charge of the NBA G-League.
